Improved Cooking Stoves

Fuel-efficient stoves reduce indoor air pollution and deforestation, improving respiratory health for families across the region.

The Improved Cooking Stoves (ICS) project distributes fuel-efficient stoves to households in eastern Nepal. Traditional open fires cause severe indoor air pollution, leading to respiratory diseases — a leading cause of death in rural Nepal. ICS stoves use significantly less wood, reducing both health risks and deforestation.

20

VDCs declared indoor air pollution-free by 2013

2015

Ilam district achieved full IAP-free status

30+

additional VDCs targeted for IAP-free status

NCDC, with the support of various government and non-government organizations, is involved in developing and promoting various types of ICS (Improved Cooking Stoves) in Eastern Nepal. NCDC is making every effort to achieve an indoor air pollution-free status by installing ICS in all households across the VDCs/municipalities.

Additionally, national targets include ensuring access to clean cooking technologies for all by 2019. Subsequently, the District Development Committee [DDC] of Ilam completed IAP-free status across the entire district in 2015. NCDC has been successful in declaring 20 VDCs Indoor Air Pollution [IAP] free areas by 2013. NCDC targets to achieve IAP-free status in an additional 30 VDCs by the end of the year 2018.
