Improved Cooking Stoves

Fuel-efficient stoves reduce indoor air pollution and deforestation, improving respiratory health for families across the region.

The Improved Cooking Stoves (ICS) project distributes fuel-efficient stoves to households in eastern Nepal. Traditional open fires cause severe indoor air pollution, leading to respiratory diseases — a leading cause of death in rural Nepal. ICS stoves use significantly less wood, reducing both health risks and deforestation.

additional VDCs targeted for IAP-free status

NCDC, with the support of government and non-government organizations, develops and promotes a range of Improved Cooking Stoves (ICS) across eastern Nepal. Traditional open fires produce dangerous levels of indoor air pollution — a leading cause of respiratory disease. NCDC's programme aims to achieve an indoor air pollution-free status by installing ICS in every household across target VDCs and municipalities.

Nepal's national targets call for access to clean cooking technologies for all households by 2019. The District Development Committee (DDC) of Ilam completed IAP-free status across the whole district in 2015. NCDC has been instrumental in this progress — successfully declaring 20 VDCs Indoor Air Pollution-free by 2013, and targeting a further 30 VDCs by end of 2018.
